The Wackiness That Is My Life!

Justin came over yesterday just as I had discovered some old Animal Planet tattoos. He helped Ian put one on and then had Ian help with his! It cracks me up! They were goofing in the bathroom with them for a long time. Then Ian insisted that they both go look in the big mirror, complete with a little flexing!

And then...the faces! Ian has fully embraced "funny faces"! He asks us to make them, he makes them, and they just seem to get better and better!

Here for credits and journaling!

Floating Around The Internet

So...how many of you agree this is just wrong???

What Katrina Means

You are a seeker of knowledge, and you have learned many things in your life.
You are also a keeper of knowledge - meaning you don't spill secrets or spread gossip.
People sometimes think you're snobby or aloof, but you're just too deep in thought to pay attention to them.

You are usually the best at everything ... you strive for perfection.
You are confident, authoritative, and aggressive.
You have the classic "Type A" personality.

You are a seeker. You often find yourself restless - and you have a lot of questions about life.
You tend to travel often, to fairly random locations. You're most comfortable when you're far away from home.
You are quite passionate and easily tempted. Your impulses sometimes get you into trouble.

You are wild, crazy, and a huge rebel. You're always up to something.
You have a ton of energy, and most people can't handle you. You're very intense.
You definitely are a handful, and you're likely to get in trouble. But your kind of trouble is a lot of fun.

You tend to be pretty tightly wound. It's easy to get you excited... which can be a good or bad thing.
You have a lot of enthusiasm, but it fades rather quickly. You don't stick with any one thing for very long.
You have the drive to accomplish a lot in a short amount of time. Your biggest problem is making sure you finish the projects you start.

You are very intuitive and wise. You understand the world better than most people.
You also have a very active imagination. You often get carried away with your thoughts.
You are prone to a little paranoia and jealousy. You sometimes go overboard in interpreting signals.

Yeah...I know...it is perfectly accurate...well at least most of it!

Awake At 3AM

What happens when you fall asleep at 8PM? 3AM my eyes pop open...wide awake! So here I am trying to find noiseless things to do in a dark house filled with moving boxes. Sometimes I wish I was one of those people who could sleep for about 12 hours without a problem! Most of the time I'm just begging to sleep uninterupted 6 hours, so I won't complain!
Lately I seem to think in blogposts so I have about a million things I could write like--

  • frustrations with having our move postponed to next week
  • Ian's clumsiness this week -- the kiddo is running into everything!
  • the merits of cleaning out my refrigerator (again)
  • how I've packed everything but a few essentials in the kitchen and am wondering now why I need any of those nonessential things
  • the fact that I have 5 glass pie plates in my possession and don't remember ever making pie (or having it made for me by Shea...well maybe once)
  • my stolen pie plates (mom? are these yours?)
  • the merits of not wasting things and how that makes it difficult to throw anything away
  • 5 pie plates
  • is it a pie plate or a pie dish? hmmmm
  • global warming...and the fact that Ian now answers "global warming" if you ask him what scares him
  • what scares global warming? trash (long post and a yet to be written children's book behind that!)
  • I'm really bad about staying touch with friends...if only they were awake at 4AM...we could chat uninterupted for at least an hour!

Funny thing? I thought I'd just post photos this morning...but now I've rambled!

Ian 2 years ago and Ian last week!

He only wore that little baseball overall thingy once...it was a gift I think. I'm kind of anti the whole sports motif clothing thing, but of course having now written that somewhere the entire world can see, it will become his preferred attire! (aka...I'll headbut you if you don't put that Raiders shirt on me!)

POTD 051808, originally uploaded by sheakey.

He's ready to go! Ian is a little confused about why we can't go to his new house, and why we keep driving by it! Some days he wants to stay in "his house' but as soon as we mention the tiny park across the street he gets very excited!

The boxes are stacked in our living room and he's discovered one little corner that he likes to sit. He looks like he is ready to go! It is a rare moment that he isn't in the boxes! I'd been trying to get this photo for three days (leaving the shorter spot for him and just stacking around him). Of course today, with no pants on, he pops up there and says, "momma take a picture." And when the boy asks...I comply! That pout? He's discovered making funny faces for the camera. He thinks it is hysterical to make funny faces and then look at them right after!

What a clown!

Just One Year Ago

I was looking through old scrapbook pages tonight and found this one.

So if I ignore the fact that my designs have REALLY improved what I do see is really amazing! Look at that sweet little face, but if you read the journaling you'll be blown away. It is hard to believe that it was just a year ago that he could only say one or two words together and most people couldn't understand them! Now he is a sentence making, talking machine! He now asks questions and waits for responses and can carry on a conversation! How did this happen so quickly?!

***ETA***
Okay I couldn't stand it! That layout is just sad...so for comparison here is a page I finished today instead of finishing packing :) Credits are here

We ventured out to Folsom today to meet Rhonda and her son Logan at the park. Rhonda and I met online at Designer Digitals and realized our boys were really close in age and that we lived about 30 minutes apart! It was fun to meet them both although I wish it had been a little less than 90 degrees at 1030AM!

Was such a great experience to meet someone for the first time who I felt like I've known for so long!

Spent the morning at Sarah's parent's house. Ian wasn't too excited about swimming but he loved dancing! I love the nostalgia that surrounds everything about Sarah! It was great to see Roy, Leo and Ian really beginning to play with each other rather than just near each other!

Been In A Bar Fight?

What happens when you try to force an unhappy 2 year old to put his pants on before he's ready? Well...

The best part? I got to stand in front of a room of 20 people about 40 minutes after it happened just as it was starting to swell and turn pretty colors!

Poor little guy...when he saw me that afternoon he said, "I hurt Momma."

So from this day forward Ian will be going without pants...at least until he can put them on himself!

Happy Mother's Day!

Fortunately this face only lasted a couple of minutes and, thankfully, I can't remember what caused it in the first place! I'm sure it was something big like telling him he couldn't eat ice cream or run in the street or hit the wall with a bat or vote in the Democratic Primary.

POTD 050808 -- Comfort Food

POTD 050808, originally uploaded by sheakey.

This post has virtually nothing to do with Ian!

Things (as I've whined about already) have been a bit hectic. May and June are always my busiest months of the year as state agencies schedule a lot of training to spend the money they have left. I've just picked up a bunch of new projects for a client who has lost a lot of staff and need some help! It is a perfect project! Busy time for Shea too, he just finished STAR testing with his kids and now has about a month of end of the year stuff left with his 8th graders.

So what does all of this have to do with macaroni and cheese?

Well...it made me happy! And I needed happy!

I've been eating a vegan oil free diet for about 7 weeks. I am absolutely loving it and enjoying really tasting foods for their natrual goodness. I've been vegetarian for A LONG time so moving up a notch to vegan has been easy. And there are some definite body mass and energy benefits!

I found this recipe and discovered my new comfort food! It tastes absolutely decadent and I don't have to feel guilty about it! No oil, no cheese, no wheat, nothing but pure yummy goodness! Added a little broccolli and mmmmmm my favorite childhood food was served! Shea loved it too which is always a plus.

Who knew it would make me so stinking happy??!!!

Ian didn't eat it...but he's on a hunger strike at home this week! (he did nibble on broccolli...the kid is weird!)

Ian and spent a little time together at Fairy Tale Town today. We both needed to get out of the house and just be goofy for a bit! We did the regular circuit of pirate boat followed by the train but changed it up some with a picnic lunch with a little push up treat after! He saw someone else with one and he had to have one!

I took him to a nice shady spot to take a photo of him with it and this is what I got! A full pose showing off his treat!

True to form he ate about 3 bites and the rest melted all over him :-) It was so worth it!

was going to take a different photo for POTD tonight but then I thought...this photo just sums up how I feel right now. Holding on while I hope I don't lose my pants ;-) (it's been a rough monday) (see post below!)

Small Rewards

Today was the day I felt the full pressure of everything going on in our lives. Our home is a sea of boxes interspersed with toys, laundry, dirty dishes and work. I spent the day emailing the requests from my insurance agent to my realtor and then back to the insurance agent. Fielded calls from the mortgage broker who is waiting for the realtor who is waiting for the seller's agent who is waiting for the seller all between repeatedly looking at our accounts, adding things up, wondering how much things are going to really cost, wondering if we really are going to need to have two gigantic trees trimmed before we move in and kicking myself for not requesting that in our list of fixes. In two weeks this should all be behind us. We will be in our new home with the intent of being there for a very long time (I'm hesitant with that one only because 10 years ago we also bought the home we would be in forever).

Then my printer runs out of ink before I can print the handouts for tomorrow's class...and I have no ink...and Ian won't go to bed...and Shea has been running around like crazy with school...

After cries of "I hungry," I attempted to get Ian to eat the yogurt he request...which, of course, was just a ploy to get me in ther room! He ate nothing.

After a little more protest, I held him, rocked him, and sang the song I've sung to him since he was just days old. The one I made up. The one I need to write down so I don't forget it.

After 3 minutes he was still. After 5 minutes I could tell he was asleep. It was just what I needed today.

I felt a little naked without a camera at Amanda's wedding, but I had my phone :) Lainie and Ian had such a good time at the wedding. They both danced and chased after each other and shared flowers!

Unitl this photo, I had not realized just how much their eyes are alike.

And Lainie was completely right today when she told Ian, "you are getting big!"

At first he tried to avoid sleep by just crying. Then he moved into saying "I hungry" and holding his stomach like we had starved him for days. Now he is embracing just simply being cute. Posing for photos, giggling until we all laugh, goofing. He's a crazy kiddo!

Ian had a great time with Kirin! I'm amazed at just how close they are in size and eating habits. They spent the morning at the train museum and the afternoon we went for tea. I couldn't resist this photo at the True Love Coffee House and they were actually willing to stand their and smile!

Ian's cousin Kirin is visiting from San Diego! So good to see him! They are having a blast together!

I think this photo tells the story though...do you think he realizes that the cousins in the bathtub together photo will show up at a family function when they are 15?

He's so like his Uncle Justin! I just didn't expect to see it at 2.5!

Sorry Mom!

I had great intentions after my mom's last visit of uploading something great everyday. That lasted for exactly one day! Oops! It has been a little crazy around here. But enough with excuses!

Here is a little making up for it! Since I also know that this week is crazy again...probably won't be around much! Work and Erin is visiting and then traveling for Amanda's wedding. I don't know if I can be away from my computer that long! :-)

A little glimpse at our weekend.

Spent the morning with Kathy and kids! I just can't get enough of this little guys big blue eyes and sweet smile! He is such a happy little guy!

Ian had such a good time playing with Addy. He's so lucky to have friends that he has known his entire life! He gets so excited when he sees Addy...he jumps up and down and squeals her name! Only Becky and Justin get that reception from him!

He was thrilled...and immediately found the car and people in the mix.

Our life is now over as we know it :)

Ian had a great day at the park yesterday with his friends! For the first time in a LONG time we were all together! 6 moms, 5 toddlers, 2 infants, 1 newborn...that's a lot of kids!

I discovered too since I'm the mom with one that I get to be the cool going down the slide, pushing the swing, helping with the bike, entertaining mom. How fun is that?!

I can't believe that they are all turning 3 this year (Roy's birthday party is tomorrow!) Seems like just a few days ago when we were still comparing birth stories!

He is just too cute! Kathy and I and the three kiddos spent a little time at SB's after gym class today. He is so good natured, he practically posed for this photo!

Ian and Addie had a great time playing monster and running around together. I think it is the most I have ever seen them play together.

Ian learned his first lesson in girls though...as we were leaving he wanted to give her a hug. He stood, arms outstretched, and she ran the other way! He just couldn't figure it out...so much to learn about girls...so much!

Ian ran his first race today! Well...I carried him most of the way since the crowd of kids and parents freaked him out...but we're trying to make it a postive memory for him :-)

Afterwards he kept saying, "I fell down, I'm sad...." Funny thing is he never fell down, but wow was he sad!

We'll try it again some time with a smaller race and when he's actually slept more "normally" the week before!

All Nighters

In college I loved the all nighter. I loved any reason to stay up, eat food, and watch the sun come up in the morning. Papers, exams, books to be read, it didn't matter what the assignment was! I would sometimes stay up just to help other people stay up and study. I could have been sleeping, but ahhh the draw of an all nighter!

So tonight appears to be an all nighter. It is now 12:17am, I'm awake and Ian is awake with no good sign of changing that any time soon! I think the child would stay awake forever if we didn't force him into his bed or occassionally need to drive somewhere. After about 6 months of age the kiddo seriously has never fallen asleep anywhere but those two spots. I don't have any of those cute photos of him placing his head on the sofa sleeping while he still stands. None of those cute curled up in the corner of the room shots. NONE!

He IS a sleeper...once we can get him to sleep...but geez he looks wide awake!

I'm searching for some witty banter that ties his late night and my college days...but I just don't seem to be witty at 12:22am anymore. Those days are gone. I just need sleep now. Sweet precious glorious sleep. I guess a schedule that let me have long afternoon naps made those late nights a little easier!

I think I'm too old for all nighters now...

Going By In A Blurrr

POTD 040708, originally uploaded by sheakey.

So he's growing up too quickly!

Today he asked me Why for the first time! And then proceeded to ask it about everything. I thought why happened after 3 not before?!

For the first time in his little life he also said, "I'm hungry." I've never heard him utter those words before! I didn't even know he understood hunger since he seems to exist on goldfish crackers alone!

Poser

I was taking a portrait of Shea for the IdeaBooks4U challenge. I set my camera up and had taken a few when Ian decided he wanted his picture taken! What a ham he is! This kiddo cracks me up! Notice the tongue? He's discovered how to make funny tongue noises and to whistle! I still can't whistle and he's only two!

I think water is going to be a spring/summer theme with this little guy! He wanted to play "fireman" again today which means he holds the hose in the backyard and waters the lawn. Today he discovered what happens to you when you fling the hose back and forth really quickly. He wasn't pleased at all with his discovery!

Update on house hunting...

We have an offer in on another house (and still sit in back up position for the first one). Our new offer maybe up to 6 weeks before we know anything since it is a "short sale". So sad how many homes we are looking at that are either forclosures or short sales. So sad.

So my newest weight loss program started today! I got myself a big scoop of peanut butter cup icecream from Burr's and it seemed Ian didn't like his tiny dish of pink ice cream that he asked for! So he stole mine and only gave it back when the ice cream was about ready to topple off of the cone. He was pretty proud of himself.

I don't like pink ice cream so I guess he saved me the calories!

Ian started saying this about two weeks ago. Now he says it just to make us laugh! It cracks me up how much clearer it is each day! He definitely has his voice now! It is a little frightening just how many phrases he's picked up from us (mmmm...me, since I talk more than Shea!)

Easter Eggs!

We had a great Easter visiting my family! Lots of egg coloring adults this year since the 5 year old and the 2.5 year old were bored after about an egg and just wanted to hold the colorful ones!

I love how bright they turned out!

We made an offer on another house tonight (after driving three hours so may question our judgement tomorrow!)

If we get it I'm calling in all help we are owed...it will be a very short move...but lots of sweat needs to be poured into it before the move can happen! Keep your fingers crossed (and yes mom, it will be easy to find!)

Yes...I'm behind.

This has been a long week of waiting and wondering and hoping and looking and wondering and hoping some more.

Oh...and that last post? It's a mental crossroad that Shea and I reached together. We aren't fighting just bewildered by the prospect of $250,000 for 2400 sq ft versus $350,000 for 1200 sq ft. $100,000 worth of questioning! Just reminding myself that it isn't a problem...just an expense.

Values

I am low maintenance.

I don't wear makeup. I only get my hair cut about every 6 months when it starts to bug me or just look gross. I don't need a lot of things and am comfortable in a small home.

I believe that we should leave the world a better place. I don't shop for entertainment and try to use things until they can't be used anymore. I believe that my car should be efficient and if I can walk instead of drive, I will.

I want my son to go to public school because I want to support the institution of public education, even if that may mean he doesn't get "the best" education attainable. I want him to be happy. I want him to be surrounded by people who are different than him and experience things that help him realize how fortunate he is. I believe that what I teach him is just as important as the teachers he will share with 30 other kids a day.

I believe that a vegetarian diet is best for the environment and for my body, but I would never push that upon anyone. I believe that we should live in a space that is adequate for our needs and not the largest available space possible.

I believe that we should know our neighbors. I believe that people are good. I believe that we fear what we do not know and we do not understand.
*************************************************
So why the rant?

Shea and I are at a values crossroad.

In our quest for a home (in this falsely labelled buyer's market) I cringe at the discovery that we could move to the suburbs and live in a 5 bedroom 2 bath house with a 40 minute daily commute and have over 200 home choices

We know where we want to live, we know why we want to live there. We know it will be smaller. We know it will be more expensive. We know it won't be easy to find.

And once again, we are reminded that it is expensive and sometimes difficult to live a life dedicated to what we value.

But it is the right thing...right?

POTD 031608

I get pretty emotional over things...that doesn't come as a surprise to anyone who knows me well! Just about anything can make me weepy...but few things make me absolutely proud! Today was one of those days though.
Justin ran the Shamrock'n 1/2 Marathon -- not his first race, not his longest race, just another race for him. But today was different. He'd asked if we were going to be there. And since it was local we didn't question for a moment going. After a full day yesterday sleeping in sounded like a better idea this morning...but I'm so glad I didn't!
We positioned ourselves near the Tower Bridge to watch him at about mile 1 which would then turn into mile 4 about 18 minutes later. I knew it was a good race when he passed us in 7th place. He looked great and was right on his schedule at both mile 1 and 4. After he passed us we wandered to the finish line at Railey Field, not waiting to cheer anyone else because it was just a little too cold! We found a spot at Railey field and waited for his finish. I found a photo spot as close to the field as I could (dopey finish line, no spectators on the field, had to sit in the stands...but that is topic for another post about my inability to deal well with stupid rules) I was kicking myself for not getting a little inside pass to the finish line.
I'd written down Justin's expected finish time of 122 on a Post It and waited.
Just short of that time we saw him enter the field with the announcers (Tom and Dusty) greeting him as J-Dub. Not only did he look great but he was 5th overall! A field of 3000 and MY little brother was 5th! I'm not sure if I was more proud to be his sister or to see the smile of PURE joy on his face as he crossed the line.

He's raced a lot of races, but this one was just different! It was after the race that he said he had PR'd (personal record) by 3 minutes! 3 MINUTES!! That's just crazy! He runs about a 6:20 minute per mile pace. Maybe you can cut off seconds...but minutes?? Just PROUD! Proud that he could work so hard. Proud that he can run that fast. Proud that he found something he loves! Just PROUD he's MY little brother!

Spent the day in San Francisco showing a couple of Alaskan's around! I think Ian was overwhelmed with everything. He actually sat in his stroller the entire day and just took it all in. No fussing, no fighting, just a good little guy. More pictures to come soon!

I'm stunned at the emotions we've experienced in the last 24 hours. We started the very serious part of house hunting this week. Checked our credit -- Excellent
Prequalified -- Well within our range
Realtor -- Perfect match
House -- Shea has been pouring over listings and could probably pass the real estate examine at this point

So excited to know that everything was in line.

We'd found a house that we LOVED. We had been there at at every hour of the day (except the midnight to 6am shift...a person has to sleep). We'd talked to neighbors. Walked the neighborhood. Found the park. Mind you we have done all of this all since last Friday. (except of course Shea's looking at listings--he'd been doing that since December when our house sold)

We talked to our realtor for the first time yesterday, gave him the details. We planned to meet last night at 7pm to see it. It was...perfectly us! Ian loved it, we loved it, Don (our realtor) loved it. It was quirky in a good way and just screamed buy me...you need to live here!

After an hour of wandering around, poking, prodding, turning things off and on, and doing it over again we left with Don's advice to sleep on it.

6AM this morning. Shea and I are both wide awake sitting in the living room talking about it, both knowing we didn't need to sleep on it AT ALL! I was preparing to send an email to Don to meet him to write the offer, Shea was prepared to get a sub so we could take care of it...

Shea pulls the Metrolist up to see the house...and there...in bright red letters across the photo it says

SALE PENDING!

Ahhhhhh! Can you believe the timing??!! It had been on the market for 106 days and THE DAY we look at it, they accept an offer??? THE DAY we look at it??? In THIS market????

So now...I'm sitting here wishing that it falls through for someone, knowing that can't bring about very good karma for me. So I guess we will just have to what is meant to be.

I'm sad. Shea's sad. It's 1:16PM and I haven't even brushed my teeth...

Ian and I ventured out to the Train Museum today. It was a gorgeous day outside, so we ate snacks on a bench near the museum. He jumped up from our table and said, "take a picture momma" He perched himself on a step and flipped his hat around. How did he get so big? And how did he learn to pose? :)

"I Windy"

Words spoken by a 2.5 year old feeling the wind in his face! I love his perspective and am completely prepared for "I windy" to take on many different meanings as he ages...

A relatively low key weekend! Discovered Micke Grove Park in Lodi, definitely worth the drive! And a little time at my computer to just do what I wanted to! Love those weekends.

Here's a glimpse of a few accomplishments (credits and journaling here)

Ian flew a kite today for the first time! He LOVED it! He needed a little help from dad of course!
